Warsop Old Hall has been reputed to be the most important medieval house in Nottinghamshire...

Warsop Old Hall known locally as ‘The Tudor Barn’, has been awarded a fantastic grant by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Mercian Archaeological Services CIC are proud to be delivering an exciting archaeological research project as part of this grant.

We will be working alongside some great partners to deliver an amazing community archaeology project which will:

Project Partners:

The project has been designed to answer key research questions and to enable volunteers to experience all aspects of an archaeological investigation

And, as a community archaeology project- you can come along and join in for FREE!

The project initially launched in March 2020, but was unfortunately postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

In September 2020 a small interim project was enabled via additional National Lottery Heritage funding, to encourage people to stay involved with the project, and to help engage new people to join by showing what was involved, and what could be found, prior to a full re-launch in 2021.

In March 2021 the project re-launched in full with a series of Zoom presentations- the results from September 2020 were presented at this launch, and you can see some of these results below.

But first here is an introductory movie about the project, and some of the upcoming opportunities to get involved:

Here are some initial results from the Old Hall Survey so far:

Photogrammetric Survey:

Geophysical Survey:

Measured Building Survey:

Settlement development research:

The project is also designed to research the origins of Warsop village itself, as part of Mercian’s ongoing Sherwood Forest Archaeology Project.

The working theory is that Church Warsop near the Old Hall is likely to be the oldest part of the settlement.

In September 2020 and in May 2021, Mercian have already found Saxon pottery in the vicinity of the Old Hall, and in the Church Yard, which points towards a Saxon age origin for the settlement … exciting times ahead…
