Community Archaeology Derbyshire Mercian Archaeological Services Hilton

Mercian Archaeological Services CIC and Dove Valley Community Archaeology test pitting project in Hilton, South Derbyshire...

Derbyshire County Council Archaeology

Hilton is a village in the historic Wapentake of Appletree, the village belonged to the De Ferrers Family at Domesday in 1086, and formed a part of the vast grouping of manors known as the Honour of Tutbury.

The settlement is of great interest as it shows a number of apparent phases of development including possible areas of planning in the medieval period.

This community archaeology project has been a great success and has raised interest in the village, already resulting in many new people signing up to join the local heritage group...

The project had found medieval pottery around the settlement, and has even found an intact area of medieval occupation which includes a post hole.

Hopefully this is phase 1 of what should be a fantastic project looking at not only the development of this village, but also the wider area...

Results will be available soon
