The remains of Clipstone Peel

Survey the site of King Edward II’s fortified stockade on the western edge of the former royal deer park at Clipstone, known as Clipstone Peel…

Clipstone Peel was a fortified timber stronghold built on the orders of King Edward II in 1316. It consisted of a gatehouse, hall, royal chamber, chapel, bakehouse, kitchen, grange and sheds, for cattle, oxen and sheep (Crook 1976).

The site  provided a fortified stronghold for Edward II while he stayed at Clipstone, and helped ensure the royal entourage had sufficient provisions. It offered a secure location during a time of strife following the loss of Scotland at the Battle of Bannockburn, and during Edward’s troubles with the Earl of Lancaster.

Be among the first people to ever systematically survey this important royal medieval site in Sherwood Forest…

In archaeology the ability to measure the location of a site, artefact, or earthwork is essential.

Experience the complex skills of archaeological topographic survey, recording a site with a combination of both objective and subjective survey methods.

Mercian are undertaking a long-term archaeological research project of a site in the village of Bainbridge in North Yorkshire. Bainbridge is situated in the beautiful Wensleydale Valley, set in the iconic Yorkshire Dales National Park.

The Bainbridge Archaeology Project focuses on a multi-phase site surrounding a very rare ‘Slight Univallate Hillfort’ dating from the Late Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age.

Bainbridge was formerly the administrative centre of the medieval Forest of Wensleydale, and the magnificent Bolton Castle near Leyburn dominates the valley to the east. The area is famous not only for its beautiful landscape, but also it world famous cheese, and as the backdrop to the Television series ‘All Creatures Great and Small’.

This topographic survey forms a part of this project.

It will take place on Thursday 22nd, Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th November 2018. The survey will produce a new subjective topographical survey using a Total Station.

Cost of £20 per day (or £50 for all 3 days)
